Alabama peanut growers are encouraged to closely monitor fields after Auburn University Extension Entomologist Dr. Scott Graham reported the presence of lesser cornstalk borers in peanuts at the Headland Research Station. The pest can cause significant stand loss and damage to young peanut plants, particularly during hot, dry conditions.
In addition to concerns in peanuts, Graham also documented cotton jassids in the Southeast. The insect was observed on okra in Tifton, Ga., on June 10, on cotton in Tallassee, Ala., on June 11, and on cotton in Quincy, Fla., on June 12. While cotton jassids have primarily been associated with cotton production, their recent detection in Alabama highlights the importance of scouting and monitoring fields as the growing season progresses.
Graham shared the observations through the Alabama Insect Blog, encouraging growers to remain vigilant and work with Extension personnel to identify and manage emerging pest threats.
